Riddle of the day

Riddle of the Day for Kids

A fresh riddle every day in two tracks, one for K–2 and one for grades 3–5. Put it on the board in the morning, collect guesses all day, reveal it before dismissal.

Grades K–2

Kindergarten to 2nd grade
Gr 2What am I?

I'm a bird, but I can't fly. I waddle on ice and zoom through icy water. My feathers are black and white. What am I?

Hint

Many of my kind live near the cold South Pole.

Show answer

A penguin

Why it works: Penguins are birds, but their wings work like flippers, so they zoom through water instead of flying in the air.

Yesterday's riddle: What starts with T, ends with T, and has T inside it?Answer: A teapot

Grades 3–5

3rd to 5th grade
Gr 3Logic

Which is heavier: a pound of feathers or a pound of bricks?

Hint

Listen carefully to how much of each one there is.

Show answer

They weigh the same

Why it works: A pound is a pound, so both piles weigh exactly one pound, even though bricks feel heavier.

Yesterday's riddle: I'm an even number between 20 and 30. My two digits add up to 8. What number am I?Answer: 26

How to run a daily riddle

  1. Morning: click “Present today's riddle” and leave it on the board during arrival.
  2. All day: students write their guess on a sticky note or whisper it to you. Give the hint after lunch if nobody has it.
  3. End of day: reveal the answer and read the “why it works” line together. Ask: which word had two meanings, or which clue gave it away?

Both tracks change every day at midnight Eastern Time and won't repeat for months. Need more? Browse all riddles for kids by grade or try a This or That movement break.
